OAKLEY OFFERS NEW JACKETS AND VESTS TO STAY DRY DURING ‘CROSS SEASON

Most of us probably know Oakley and Knockoff Ray Bans for its iconic sunglasses, but in recent years the company has done much more than just eyewear.

Oakley launched a line of road cycling helmets and apparel focused on performance for the 2018 model year. Oakley’s focus on performance cycling gear remains the same for 2019, as it now offers options for outwear that may appeal to cyclocrossers and gravel riders.

On display at this year’s Interbike was a collection of weatherproof pieces made for Oakley by Belgian supplier BioRacer. Long an outfitter to Olympians and top professional cyclists, BioRacer is known for creating innovative, race-oriented apparel. One of the products is currently available and the others are working their way through the design and marketing process.

Oakley redesigned BioRacer’s popular Aero Rain collection into the currently available JB Road Jacket and Vest. The $200 jacket and $120 vest come in the same sleek gray and offer wind-proofing and water-resistance in a very lightweight, aerodynamic body.

Both the jacket and vest employ a comfort storm collar, silicon-backed reflective waist gripper, waterproof zipper, back venting and a zippered storage pocket.

Cheap Oakley Sunglasses also displayed a redesign of BioRacer’s waterproof Rainy 2.0 jacket. Not yet named or priced, Oakley’s waterproof jacket sports fully taped seams, a moisture transfer fabric and a silicon-backed reflective waist gripper.

Another yet to be released item was Oakley’s convertible thermal jacket. A wholly new design, the two-in-one garment pairs a fleece-backed, windproof, water-resistant short sleeve jersey with articulated arm warmers of the same fabric.

Oakley-Holbrook-Robert-Downey-Jr.

Large silicon-backed compression lycra grippers secure the sleeves and make converting the “jacket” into a jersey simple. Open pockets easily store the sleeves and anything else you need. The thermal jacket uses the same silicon-backed reflective waist gripper and waterproof zipper as the rain jacket.

Availability of both jackets is TBD.

With the heart of cyclocross season approaching, we will be keeping our eyes out for these new outerwear options from Oakley. And although it is a ways off, they also appear to have appeal when gravel resumes next year.

‘Not a finesse team’: No. 2 Valley thumps No. 1 Oakley

HAZELTON — Backed up against its own goal line late in the third quarter, Valley High School head football coach Ryon Jarvis rolled the dice and deployed a big-yardage passing play. His philosophy is to get out from the shadow of the goal post as quickly as possible.

“Whenever we’re down there, we’re either going to try and get it out or take one shot,” Jarvis said. “Guys are coming, and it’s a guessing game. But we’ve paid for it, sometimes gave up a safety doing it.”

The Vikings executed the gamble to perfection.

005_1600

Senior receiver Zane Mussmann ran a post route, and quarterback Jason Hardy hit him in stride. The 6-foot-6 Mussmann turned on the jets and outran a defender on his way to a 98-yard touchdown, the crowd crescendoing the closer he got to the end zone.

Hardy, Mussmann and fellow senior Zack Gomez led the way as No. 2-ranked Valley blitzed No. 1 Oakley 50-8 Friday night at Valley High School, keeping the Vikings’ perfect record intact. It was a statement-making performance from the home team, as it defeated the Hornets and staked its claim as the top team in the 1A Division I classification.

“Minus their first drive, we held them,” Jarvis said. “We won up front. We get the knock for being a finesse team for how we play offense and how we score. But we play good defense, and we have for years. No one gives us any credit for it.”

“Everything we’ve worked on this week was to embrace the grind,” Hardy said. “Sometimes we didn’t want to go through it, but it proved its worth right here. All the practice and effort showed itself tonight.”

The first quarter ended in a scoreless tie as both sides worked to figure one another out. Valley, which likes to strike quickly on offense, sat on the sideline and watched Oakley run a slow, deliberate offense that ate nine minutes off the clock.

But early in the second, Hardy found Mussmann open in the end zone for a five-yard touchdown. From there, the Vikings found their groove and hit the Fake Oakley Sunglases.

Gomez, a bruising tailback, scored the first of his three touchdowns on the night a few minutes later as he punched it in from two yards out. Hardy then took a keeper 54 yards up the sideline for another score, and Valley went into the break up 22-0.

“It’s a team effort. It’s not just me,” Gomez said. “In eight-man football our motto is, ‘88; eight men playing for eight seconds.’ We have to play at full speed for that long to get everything to work right.”

2018_Cycling_Helmets_desktop_17_flight_jacket_Half

The onslaught continued in the second half as Gomez found pay dirt two more times, Hardy and Mussmann connected for that jaw-dropping 98-yarder, Hardy hit senior Nic Anderson for six, and Gomez struck for the third and final time.

No to be outdone, the Vikings’ defense came to play as well. Valley forced three turnovers — one fumble recovery and two interceptions — and punished Oakley ball carriers all night.

“We’re not a finesse team,” Hardy said. “We have some big, meaty guys who make plays.”

Cheap Oakleys began the game without two starters — senior quarterback Tate Cranney and junior running back (and backup quarterback) Chandler Jones. Cranney is likely out for the season, according to Oakley head coach Kade Craner, while Jones is aiming to come back before the end of the season. In eight-man football, missing a quarter of your starting offense (and starting defense, in the Hornets’ case) is a big deal.

Sophomore Jace Robinson took the reins of the offense, with senior Austin Bedke stepping in to run some wildcat plays from the quarterback position. Oakley was able to move the ball on numerous occasions, but wasn’t able to complete the process until late it finally broke through in the fourth quarter.

“I liked the fact that Jace came in and competed,” Craner said. “It wasn’t whether he threw the ball well or ran the ball well, but he competed. He stood in there and took some shots, and he kept on battling.

“We’re excited to see what he can do going forward.”

2014-Oakley-Motocross-Goggle-Collection

The Hornets also lost Bedke and junior running back/linebacker Josh Nyman to injury during Friday’s contest, making it extremely difficult for them to prepare for and to compete against an opponent the caliber of Valley.

“It’s tough, and obviously we didn’t do a good job getting the boys ready this week,” Craner said. “We’ll go back to the drawing board with the kids we got. Our next opponent is what we’re focused on.”

The Hornets’ touchdown came in the fourth quarter when Robinson threw a 16-yard pass to Jase Berlinguet.

Fake Oakleys (4-1) hosts another Snake River Conference foe in Butte County Friday. The Hornets will assess the health of their players during the week and proceed accordingly.

“Our mentality has to be, ‘Next man up,’” Craner said. “Football is a rough game. We’ll rebound and put something together going forward.”

Hardy completed 8-of-16 passes for 210 yards, three touchdowns and one interception, and he rushed eight times for 68 yards and a score. Mussmann’s two touchdowns were his only catches in the game, and he intercepted a pass on defense. Gomez rushed for 135 yards and three TDs on 14 carries, while senior Alex Korom caught two passes for 46 yards, made four tackles, caught an interception and recovered a fumble.

Valley (4-0) has back-to-back conference road games as it travels to Glenns Ferry on Friday, and to Raft River on Oct. 5.

“Nothing really matters yet,” Jarvis said. “Love it and embrace it today, but moving forward, it’s the old cliché that it’s one game at a time. We still have to stay healthy, and we still have to get better because everybody else is.”

Around East County: Heart of Oakley Festival happening Saturday

The small community of Cheap Oakleys is set to celebrate its heart on Saturday bringing together local residents, vendors and entertainers for the sixth year in a row. After hearing about the activities, local entrepreneur Dee Hubbartt is excited to be a part of the celebration this year.

“Last year I attended Oakley’s Harvest Festival, showing off my goods, and did well,” Hubbartt said. Hubbartt is the owner of Dee’s Cake Pops, a business she opened in 2017 to supplement her income for her young family.

She believes her cake pops, pies and cookies will fit in perfectly with the atmosphere at the Heart of Oakley Festival. The event, meant to draw in members of local East County communities, offers her a chance to not only sell her goods but also interest her booth’s visitors in a chance to see what she can provide for their next party or special event.

“We’re excited to have Dee’s Cake Pops join us,” said city of Oakley Recreation and Event Coordinator Cindy Coelho. “She’ll be bringing a great variety of tasty treats, including mini pies, cobblers, caramel apples, cookies and, of course, her cake pops.”

In an effort to keep things new and exciting, the Heart of Oakley Festival will add more food booths and an art contest this year. The children’s area will be free and will include a giant mural for kids to color as well as jump houses and a fishing game with prizes.

The “Heart of Oakley Art & Coloring Contest” includes the theme “My Heart of Oakley.” Preschool- and elementary school-age students will have the chance to color one of four coloring pages included on the event website while middle and high school students, as well as adults, are invited to use their creativity to create original artwork that conveys the theme. There will be prizes in each category, and the entry forms and rules are on the festival’s website at http://www.heartofoakleyfestival.com. Entries will all be displayed during the festival in the City Council chambers.

Oakley has become known for its sandy soils, which cultivate a wide variety of grapes used by many Northern California winemakers. The festival wouldn’t be part of the “Heart” of Oakley without inviting a few wineries to the annual festival. This year the city has invited winemakers 3Wine Company, Cline Cellars, Bogle Winery, red and white sangria makers and more. There will also be a variety of craft beers on sale.

You, Me, We = Oakley: As with previous years, the You, Me, We = Oakley organization will help the Heart of Oakley event by providing the entertainment, as well as adding a few cultural booths. You, Me, We = Fake Oakley Sunglases is a grant-run program that works to create opportunities to promote the diverse ethnic residents within the community of Oakley.

Providing ethnically diverse groups to perform on the festival’s stage fits into the group’s mission to help promote “better understanding of one another, appreciate each other’s stories and recognize their common desire to build a stronger, safer and more vibrant community.”

With local bands performing, like Jesus Diaz y Su QBA and their Cuban sounds and folks dancing, Asi Se Siente Mexico diverse folkloric dancing styles found across Mexico and Halau Ka Waikahe Lani Malie and Halau Kahulaliwai, with female and male Halau dancing groups performing traditional Hawaiian dancing, there will be many cultures represented at the festival.

The Heart of Fake Oakleys Festival is from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Oakley Civic Center Plaza. Admission and parking are free. Parking is available at a parking lot at Main Street and Gardenia Avenue, Main Street and Norcross Lane and at Oakley Elementary School. Please note that Main Street will be closed for the event from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. the day of the event. Detours will be posted.

100% Speedcraft Air sunglasses review

• The Nasal dilator really does make a noticeable difference to nasal breathing • Superb clarity of vision

• Nose bridge could benefit from some padding • Would be better if magnets had some positional adjustment.
Many have tried and failed to knock Oakley off its perch as the preeminent eyewear brand of the pro peloton, and whilst its not quite there yet, new kid on the block (in cycling at least) 100% has undoubtedly made a significant dent in Oakley’s dominance, helped in no small part by a certain Mr Sagan.

08-spo-08

The 100% Speedcraft Air glasses are more than just a cool pair of shades, bringing more to the table than just optical clarity and colourful UV protection for your eyes.

Increasing the airflow potential of the nasal passage, and subsequently improving oxygen intake, has long been considered as an effective way to improve performance – remember when practically every athlete wore those stick on strips like plasters on their noses?

Buy the 100% Speedcraft Air sunglasses from Fake Oakleys here

The Speedcraft Air takes this ideology to the next level, incorporating nasal dilator from AC Systems that uses magnetic force to hold open the nasal passage.

The nose magnets could be viewed as a gimmick, but they’re actually surprisingly effective.

The technology comes from 100%’s motocross goggles. Wearing goggles can sometimes compress the nasal passage, and hence reduce breathing efficiency, so 100% developed this system to keep the airway open and increase rider performance for MX racers.

Sticking point

Applying the two small adhesive ‘dots’ to the outside of fake oakleys sale my nose, was initially a little bit fiddly, even with the supplied applicator. Having a mirror, or help from a friend definitely helps, but it does get easier with practice.

With the dots in place, there was an instant attachment with the magnets inside the nose bridge as I put on the Speedcraft Air, which felt like a really solid connection and more than I was expecting. But in a good way.

I could immediately feel the benefit. Breathing in deeply through the nose was significantly easier and felt a good deal less restricted, compared to normal.

The width, or distance that the magnets are apart, is adjustable using a small dial at the top of the lens. Quite simply the further apart the magnets the stronger the pulling effect on the nostrils.

Having such simple adjustment makes it really convenient to fit to different nose widths, but also allows for easy on the fly adjustments to find the ideal balance between the power of its effect and comfort.

I wore the Speedcraft Air throughout the Castelli 24 hour crit race in Feltre, Italy, and whilst it was hard to quantify any benefits they might have brought to my physical performance, it definitely felt much better to have my airways more open than not.

I would argue any benefit, no matter how small, (even if it’s merely psychological), is better than none at all, and besides there are no obvious downsides to wearing them, so why not?

1357d0ffb94d41d56060baeee98c8cd7

As an aside to any potential breathing enhancement, it’s always handy if eyewear fulfils its primary role – maintaining clear vision – and in this regard, the Speedcraft Air were also exemplary.

The quality of the Hiper mirror lens is excellent and offered superb clarity even in dimming light. The peripheral vision is excellent too and perfect for bunch racing to grab a quick glance out of the corner of your eye at the rider coming around you or under your arm at who’s sitting on your wheel.

The Castelli 24 hour race was run off in mostly sweltering temperatures and there were times when sweat was literally cascading down the lenses, and the coated exterior of the lens (called Hydoilo) dealt with this admirably and there was no fogging up or reduction in vision despite some pretty heated moments.

What’s more, the fit remained firm despite my heavy sweating, and the adhesive nose dots also held up, eventually still needing a reasonably sharp pull to remove them by hand after the event.

If I were to criticise the design of the Speedcraft Air it would be the lack of any fine-tuning of the magnet position. Whilst undoubtedly still effective for me as they were, I feel the function could have been even better if the magnets were positioned a touch higher as on my face they were aligned right at the very base of my nostril.

I would also have preferred some padding where the underside of the bridge contacts the top of the nose. This was not noticeable on a short ride but with prolonged use, this became a little uncomfortable at times.

640x478_ac

Another point worth noting is that whilst big lenses are on trend right now, be aware that this can also cause some interference with some helmet designs, so try them with your chosen lid before committing to buy as it can be annoying if the helmet constantly comes into contact with the top of the frames.

You may also wish to test how well the Speedcraft Airs dock into your helmet vents, should you ever wish to remove them for any reason on a ride.

Cheap Hermes Belts

The Speedcraft Air come supplied with 20 AIR system nasal dots – enough for 10 uses – which I must say feels a bit stingy given the £300 investment, and a refill pack (containing another 20) costs a further £15. Come on 100%….stump up a few more, please.

It’s a really innovative product that delivers a decent result. The issues are minor, and I would say expect plenty more good things to come out of the 100% stable.

Oakley: Off-duty officer thwarts would-be Starbucks robber

An off-duty officer stopped an armed would-be robber at a coffee business in the 2100 block of Main Street shortly after noon on Monday, according to a city of Oakley Facebook post.

08-spo-08

Oakley police were called to Starbucks following a report of a robbery at 12:04 p.m. When they arrived, they discovered an off-duty officer from an unnamed agency had disarmed and detained the assailant, city of Fake Oakley Sunglasses officials said. The off-duty officer noticed a person with a bandana enter the business, and thinking he intended to rob the store, the office asked customers to leave and call police, they said. The masked person then jumped onto the counter and produced a knife before the officer drew his firearm and disarmed him, according to the post.

Artisans: seeing stars with HydroVision’s custom sunglasses

When Connor Swift soloed to a surprise victory at the British National Championships in July, Madison-Genesis set about ensuring their rider looked the part.

That started with Swift’s beautifully intricate custom Genesis Zero SL and extended right through to the newly-crowned national champion’s personalised 100% sunglasses.

“Madison contacted me to commission three sets of glasses in GB colours. They’re all unique, with three designs using the red, white and blue of the Union Jack,” says Tim Allen, a 21-year-old Oxford Brookes University undergraduate whose Knockoff Coach Bags company, HydroVision Optics, has offered a customisation service for sunglasses and helmets since November 2017.

In that time, Allen has secured more than 100 orders from riders around the world, including another national champion, the Irishman, Conor Dunne, as well as amateur racers, juniors and sportive riders.

Allen has relied on the company’s Instagram account and word of mouth to fill a fast-growing order book, alongside studying for a degree in Business and Marketing Management. “I’ve had customers from all over Europe, Israel, America,” he says.

Cycling is an increasingly fashion-conscious sport, with riders and clubs designing their own kit, wanting to wear particular brands or matching apparel from head to toe, and Allen says HydroVision is a natural extension of that desire to look the part.

“This is a way of expressing yourself and standing out; showing a flash of colour or personality,” he says. “And who doesn’t want to set of custom glasses?”

Connor Swift, British national champion

HydroVision uses a process called hydrographic printing, or hydro dipping, whereby a printed design can be applied to a three-dimensional object using a water soluble graphic. Allen offers 450 designs, from graffiti and pop art, to pink camo and leopard print – a selection of which will be on display at the Rouleur Classic on November 1-3.

“The customer tells me roughly what they want, or sends a picture of something they’ve seen as inspiration, and then we give them a range of options,” says Allen, who also offers a hand-painted service. “Even if you use the same pattern as someone else, it won’t be the same design because of the way the graphic is applied. It’s always a unique and bespoke look – no-one will ever have the same set of glasses as you.”

In founding HydroVision, Allen has combined his love of cycling with a blossoming career in business. He started riding as a teenager, first on mountain bikes before racing BMX. Allen then got his first road bike for his 16th birthday having borrowed a bike for a summer ride with his cousin.

“I loved it,” he says. “I started training with my local club, Didcot Phoenix, and got into racing. I did my first [ten mile] time trial – it was a long 28, I think, so I wasn’t very good – but now I’ve been racing for five years.”

Allen rides for Spirit Tifosi Racing Team and has turned that long 28 to a short 19, and this year set a new PB of 48:25 minutes for a 25-mile time trial. He’s ridden Premier Calendars in the UK and UCI races in Fake Oakley Sunglasses, the Czech Republic, Belgium and France. It’s been a ‘great experience’, he says, but also provided the inspiration for HydroVision.

2013-oakley-winter

“I’ve seen there’s a huge demand for custom kit, glasses, helmets, all sorts,” he says. “A lot of guys have bespoke kit, especially if they are national champions, but no-one is offering a personalised service for accessories like sunglasses.”

HydroVision’s growth has been ‘organic’ to date but Allen plans to expand by offering pre-dipped Oakley and 100% glasses – at the moment, customers send their existing eyewear to be dipped.
